Black Families, Racism, and Resilience (BFRR) Lab
In our lab, we investigate how attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors develop and shift over the course of a person's lifetime. For Black Americans, understanding development via a cultural-ecological lens enables us to understand attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in context; more specifically, how lived experiences are constructed in both positive and negative ways by policies, laws, and day-to-day interactions. In addition, inequitable experiences will have an effect on how Black Americans regard themselves and how they perceive the world around them depending on their social positioning, which includes factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, social class, and sexual orientation. Our mission is to provide solutions and approaches that are culturally responsive and empowering for Black American communities to thrive.
Black Families and Racial Justice Project
The Black Families and Racial Justice Project is a mixed-methods study of Black families' vulnerability to, and resilience to, marginalization, with a focus on parenting practices and adolescent developmental trajectories.
Equity for Black Women and Girls Project
The Equity for Black Women and Girls Project focuses on improving equity for women and girls of color by identifying risk and protective factors in educational spaces and designing and implementing culturally responsive programming that fosters strength and resilience in learning spaces.
Strengths-Based Assets of Black Adolescents Project
The Strength-Based Assets of Black Adolescents Project investigates the ways in which Black youth can thrive in spite of the barriers that racism poses to their identities by drawing on the personal and cultural assets and resources available to them.
